The Monon Railroad Historical-Technical Society, Inc. was formed
in the mid-1970s as a not-for-profit organization exclusively for educational
purposes by a group of individuals interested in preserving the memory of
the Monon Railroad. The three main purposes of The Monon Society, as it has
become known, are to: (A) Engage in the collection and preservation of information,
vestige, and other items of historical or technical interest concerning the
Monon Railroad
and its predecessor companies or subsidiaries. (B) Engage in research concerning
The Monon for educational purposes. (C) Maintain an association of persons
having an interest in The Monon.
Our “World Headquarters” is located in Salem, Indiana, the birthplace of the Monon Railroad. We lease a large room in the basement of the Salem Depot Museum in which our archives and artifacts are stored.
The archives are secured, but will be made available to any member of the MRHTS by contacting the archivist or president. Board meetings are also held at the Depot, as well as our “mini” conventions.
The Depot itself is owned and operated by the Washington County Historical Society.
Persons who may drop off donations at the Depot, need to make it clear that the items donated are to go to the Monon Society. Otherwise, they will become part of the Washington County Historical Society collections.
The MRHTS previous headquarters were located at Linden, Indiana from 1995 through 2013.
