New York Central Pictures, Page 6
Pictures from in and around South Bend, Indiana.
These pictures come from the talented camera of Louis Rague, Dennis Schmidt and others. Railroad fans and buffs will recognize these images since they are also posted at George Elwoods Fallen Flags And Other Railroad Pictures web site, New York Central page. It is because I appreciate their work so much that I have chosen to add them to the New York Central pages here at Tom's Railroad Pictures.
-Special thanks to Dan Lawecki for assistance in location identifications-
Mishawaka Indiana
Left: Locomotive 1058 at Mishawaka, May 19, 1958. I believe this was after clearing of a derailment. Right: Another picture of 1058 in Mishawaka, same date. Evidence such as the wheels to the right lead me to believe that these pictures were taken after a derailment of some sort was removed.
NYC locomotive #592 about to cross the St. Joseph River on
the Elkhart And Western line east of the Ball Band Company in downtown Mishawaka,
April of 1958.
Left: Eastbound freight passing through Mishawaka, May 1958. Right: Another westbound at Mishawaka, also 1958. Exact location on both, unknown.
Left: GP locomotive #5611 on NYC Wreck train in Mishawaka, Indiana. May of 1958. Right: #5741 on the same wreck, May, 19, 1958.
Union Station Area
Left: Locomotive 4007 arriving at Union Station in downtown South Bend, circa 1956. Right: 4018 also coming to a stop in South Bend, April 1966. This train is eastbound.
Around South Bend Locations
Action on the NYC's Niles Line, West Branch. Left: E8 #4018 crossing the St. Joseph River north of downtown on the Niles Line, circa 1956. Right: GP unit pulling local freight near the Drewrys Plant, circa 1957. The switch stand pictured is still there in 2005. Judging by the coal cars, this freight might be enroute to the University Of Notre Dame to drop off some full hoppers of coal for the power plant.
Left: This switcher is on the St. Joseph, South Bend & Southern line immediately west of Olive Street. The view in the photo is south and the building in the background is the old Mastic plant. Right: #5950 on the point of a Notre Dame football special heading back to Niles line just south of Lincolnway West. The fuel oil company pictured is still in business but the tracks are now silent.
This
location might be on the Niles Branch between Ford St. and Western Ave.,
but we are not certain. This one is a bit of a mystery. It may also be the near
the roundhouse at the east end of Olivers Yard, but the orientation of
the tracks to the garage in the background just doesn't look right. We hope to
pin point a location in the near future.
NYC
steam locomotive on campus on the Notre Dame & Western Railroad, October
12, 1946. Great photo. For
those
interested,
Quarterback Johnny Lujack, fullback Jim Mello, and halfback Terry Brennan
run wild
as the Irish outclassed the Purdue Boilermakers 49-6 in South Bend. This
obviously was a football special.
NYC Olivers Yard Area
NYC Yard at Olivers. Left: #6211 sits on the turntable at the Olivers Yard, 1956. There were two seperate yards connected by an interchange track. The NYC Olivers Yard was much, much larger, and they dominated the local railroad scene in terms of business volume. Right: NYC switcher 694 in the NYC Olivers Yard, circa 1956.
Left: Switcher coming into the Olivers Yard from the Niles Line, March 1956. Right: #5927 on a freight coming into the yard from the Niles line, 1958.
Left: This westbound freight is crossing Ford Street at Olivers Yard on the Kankakee Belt, circa 1958. Right: Another westbound freight near the same area, circa 1956.
This
location is the east end of the NYC Olivers Yard.
Left: The photo was taken at the east end of Olivers Yard, circa 1957. The large tan building in the background was the old Vorheis-Jontz Lumber Co. Today the building is occupied by the Cal Pro Fence Company. Right: This train is eastbound at the Ford Street grade crossing, no date listed.
This
is the east end of Olivers Yard, near the NYC turntable and roundhouse.
Kankakee Belt And Switching
Left: I believe this photo was taken at the Western
Avenue grade crossing on the old Michigan Central Connection (Niles Branch).
The view is generally to the north, and it appears that the southbound
train has just crossed the Western Division double-tracked mainline, and
is heading back to Olivers Yard. If you look closely
at the left side of the photo, you can see a large signal mast cantilevered
over the mainline tracks. That signal mast would have protected the crossing.
Right: This wreck train and derrick are west of South Bend on the Kankakee
Belt
mainline, circa 1956.
This
shot is on the Kankakee Belt line at the extreme west end of Olivers Yard.
Thanks to Dennis Schmidt for the information.

Another shot taken from the US 20 overpass. The elevator
pictured is still in operation in 2005.

is July 10, 1960.
