Lake Shore & Michigan Southern

The LS&MS became the New York Central. The pictures here are of the line before it was elevated through South Bend.

Lake Shore Depot, Mishawaka, Indiana. Exact date unknown. -Mike Fleming Collection.- Right: Mishawaka Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Depot, 1907 -Strombeck Collection-

Left: Picture description: "east of second crossing, east of the depot, looking towards the west, Mishawaka, Indiana, July 11, 1906." Right: Picture description: "east of Michigan Avenue crossing, looking towards the west, South Bend, Indiana, July 11, 1906."

Left: Picture description: "east of Scott Street crossing, looking east, South Bend, Indiana, July 11, 1906." Note, Studebaker Carriage Works to the right of the photo. Right: Picture description: "east of Scott Street crossing, looking towards the west, South Bend, Indiana, July 11, 1906." Oliver Plow Works is to the left of the photo in the background. That is the old office building with the Oliver name on it.

Left: Picture description: "west from east of South Bend Toy Company switch in East End." Right: Picture description: "Cherry Street on the west side of South Bend, looking west." CI&S Crossing and the Singer Works is towards the back, left side of the picture.

Picture description: "West of Michigan Central crossing, looking east, Lydick, Indiana, July 11, 1906." I believe this is the line that would cross the NYC and be known as the Pumpkin Vine. Note absence of the South Shore tracks in photo.

Images from a wreck/ derialment that happened in 1931?? I have not been able to determine the exact date. Based on the absence of leaves on the tree, it would be late in the year, November or December. I am still looking for additional information and details.

The incident took place at Marettia Street. The downtown elevation was relatively new.

Left: NYC steam locomotive 2555 passing the Bendix Plant on the west side of South Bend, date unknown. Harry Zillmer/ John Strombeck photo. Right: And the caboose passing by also. (Since different photographers took each picture, it is unlikely it is the same train.) Dennis Schmidt photo.

Left: NYC E8 sits at Union Depot, date unknown. Dennis Schmidt photo. Right: New York Central depot, Mishawaka, Indiana, 1961. This depot sat on the north side of the tracks where the parking lot for St. Joseph Hospital Mishawaka is today. I believe that it burned down after being abandoned.

The year is 1962. The 20th Century Limited leaving South Bend's Union Station. It will continue on its journey until it reaches Chicago.

Left and Right: Sunday, September 1, 1951. Pictured is a derailment on the New York Central. This accident occured about 11pm at Cherry Street on the west side of South Bend. Seventeen cars of the 61 car eastbound train derailed. The accident was caused by a burned out journal, which broke an axle. Damage was estimated at $100,000.00 and several local residents were arrested for petit larceny and looting. The 17 refridgerated cars carried perishables, including choice cuts of meat, cheese, butter and canned milk. Pictured is the clean up operations Monday, September 2, 1951.
